Amazon Prime is one of the most popular subscriptions in the world — and one of the most expensive at $14.99/month or $139/year. If you're not using the free shipping, Prime Video, and other perks enough to justify the cost, here's how to cancel.

What Does Amazon Prime Cost?

PlanPriceAnnual Cost
Monthly$14.99/mo$179.88
Annual$139/year$139.00
Student Monthly$7.49/mo$89.88
Student Annual$69/year$69.00

Over 5 years, that's up to $899 on the annual plan or $695 on the student plan.

How to Cancel Amazon Prime

Step 1: Go to Your Prime Membership

  1. Visit amazon.com and sign in
  2. Click "Account & Lists" in the top-right
  3. Select "Prime Membership" (or go directly to amazon.com/prime)

Step 2: End Your Membership

  1. Click "Update, cancel and more" on the left side
  2. Click "End membership"
  3. Amazon will try to keep you — they'll offer to:
    • Pause your membership
    • Switch to a different plan
    • Remind you of benefits you'll lose

Step 3: Confirm Cancellation

  1. Click through Amazon's retention offers (there may be 2-3 screens)
  2. Select your preferred end date
  3. Click "End on [date]" to confirm

Pro tip: If you haven't used any Prime benefits since your last renewal, you may be eligible for a full refund. Amazon's policy allows refunds if you haven't used Prime shipping, Video, Music, or other benefits in the current billing period.

What You Lose When You Cancel

  • Free 2-day shipping (and same-day/1-day in eligible areas)
  • Prime Video streaming
  • Prime Music (limited catalog)
  • Prime Reading (ebooks and magazines)
  • Amazon Photos unlimited storage
  • Prime Day access
  • Whole Foods discounts

What You Keep

  • Your Amazon account and order history
  • Items already purchased
  • Kindle books you've bought (not borrowed)
  • Your wishlists and saved items

Smart Alternatives

Instead of canceling entirely, consider:

  1. Switch to annual billing — Save $40.88/year vs. monthly
  2. Share with household — Amazon Household lets you share benefits with one other adult
  3. Cancel and re-subscribe strategically — Subscribe for 1-2 months during heavy shopping periods (Prime Day, holidays) and cancel the rest of the year
