What Happens to Your Games?

This is the most important thing to understand:

  • Game Pass games become unplayable — You lose access to every game in the Game Pass library immediately after your subscription ends
  • Games you purchased at a discount — These remain yours. Any games you bought (even with the Game Pass member discount) stay in your library
  • Save data is preserved — Your game saves, achievements, and progress are tied to your Xbox account, not your subscription
  • Online multiplayer — If you cancel Game Pass Ultimate or Core, you lose Xbox online multiplayer access

The "Turn Off Auto-Renew" Option

If you're not sure about canceling, you can simply turn off auto-renewal:

  1. Go to your subscription management page
  2. Instead of "Cancel," select "Turn off recurring billing"
  3. You keep access until the end of your current period
  4. No more charges after that

This is the safest option — you get to use what you've paid for without worrying about forgetting to cancel.

Should You Cancel or Pause?

Cancel if:

  • You haven't played a Game Pass game in over a month
  • You mainly play one or two games you could buy outright
  • You're trying to cut gaming expenses

Keep if:

  • You try 3+ new games per month
  • You play online multiplayer regularly (Ultimate/Core required)
  • You use cloud gaming on your phone or tablet

Alternatives

  • Buy games on sale — Xbox frequently has sales with 50-75% off. Buy the 2-3 games you actually play
  • PlayStation Plus Essential ($59.99/year) — Cheaper for just online multiplayer
  • Free-to-play games — Fortnite, Apex Legends, Warzone, and Rocket League don't require any subscription
